Presenting a blueprint for the law firm of the future through AI
-Interview with Park Dong-il and Jeong Chan-woo, representative attorneys of Daeryun LLC (Limited)
The gaze of the domestic law firm industry is turning in unison toward Legal Tech. This is because, breaking away from the traditional method of analyzing vast precedents and statutes and drafting documents, combining AI (artificial intelligence) and big data to maximize work efficiency has emerged as a law firm's core competitiveness. Amid this trend, the moves of Daeryun LLC—which is building its own legal tech ecosystem and presenting a new topic for legal services—are drawing attention. We met representative attorneys Park Dong-il and Jeong Chan-woo at Daeryun's main office in Yeouido, Seoul, and asked about future direction.
Representative attorney Park Dong-il diagnosed the current legal market as a period of upheaval, emphasizing that the adoption of legal tech is an inevitable choice to provide clients with the highest level of results. Attorney Park explained, "The primary goal is to shorten the physical time consumed in analyzing tens of thousands of precedents and framing the skeleton of documents," adding, "The direction of expertise Daeryun pursues is to have that secured time and energy poured entirely into legal judgment."
To realize this philosophy in practice, Daeryun adopted its in-house-developed "AI Daeryun" and has been using it since last year. This program is a customized artificial intelligence that used deep learning to train on the tens of thousands of winning cases and litigation data Daeryun has accumulated over the past decade or so. It serves as a practical assistant that extracts favorable issues amid complex facts, quickly finds similar lower-court precedents, and performs vast evidence summarization and cross-verification.
Furthermore, Daeryun raised the completeness of its internal work innovation through its in-house-built work support program "Romance-Law." It is a next-generation legal work solution designed to overcome the limits of general-purpose programs on the market and realize an efficient legal practice environment. Equipped with an AI assistant, it allows attorneys to receive real-time reports across their work, such as managing case hearing dates and integrating case records. Attorney Park's explanation is that by having AI meticulously assist litigation practice like a personal secretary, it offsets attorneys' work fatigue.
Daeryun's technological innovation does not stop at internal efficiency but is expanding in a direction that lowers the threshold of legal services. An example is "My Daeryun," a client-only communication application launched late last year. Through it, clients can check in real time on their smartphones the progress of their own case, hearing date guidance, whether documents have been submitted, and more, and be transparently kept informed of the overall situation of the case.
On why Daeryun devotes effort to building its own technology ecosystem, bearing enormous costs instead of relying on external platforms, representative attorney Jeong Chan-woo said, "It is because of thorough protection of customer data and unwavering service provision." Attorney Jeong pointed out, "When relying on external platforms, there is a risk that customers' sensitive legal data could leak externally, and it is difficult to fully embody a law firm's unique philosophy in the system," adding, "By building Daeryun's own independent technology infrastructure, we have laid the groundwork to focus solely on protecting clients' rights without being shaken by external controversies or regulatory risks."
Even amid technological advancement, the two representative attorneys jointly emphasized the right path a law firm must uphold. Attorney Jeong explained, "In the end, representing a client's grievances in court and capturing subtle nuances to coordinate interests is a domain only a person—that is, a legal expert—can perform," adding, "Daeryun's legal tech will be a precise tool that supports attorneys' keen insight and maximizes the essential value of legal services." Attorney Park stated, "Legal tech is an irresistible giant wave in the legal market," adding, "Based on the most advanced technology, we will provide clients with the most precise legal solutions."
