[Maritime Court ON] ② Daeryun Strengthens International Maritime Legal Services With Overseas Networks and Multilingual Capabilities

We look at the response strategies of law firms preparing for the era of the maritime court.

Daeryun LLC launched a Maritime Court Task Force (TF) last month, in preparation for the opening of the Maritime and International Commercial Court in March 2028. The TF places at the forefront maritime legal experts with experience advising and litigating for foreign shipping and shipbuilding companies, as well as personnel capable of multilingual communication in English, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Vietnamese, and more. The plan is to strengthen international maritime legal services by linking overseas networks with multinational specialized personnel.

Daeryun presents on-site responsiveness and a global convergence advisory system as its differentiated competitiveness. It has established base offices in Busan and Incheon, the planned sites for the maritime court, so that initial case response and evidence preservation can be carried out immediately. Work to expand its overseas network is also underway. It is pursuing the establishment of local offices in Singapore, Shanghai, and London, where major arbitration institutions are located, and is also expanding MOUs (memorandums of understanding) with overseas law firms.

Another feature is that litigation attorneys, foreign attorneys, and administrative sanctions/customs/tax experts collaborate as one team on a single case. Accordingly, it can integrate the handling of multilingual communication, international arbitration, and the resolution of complex customs and criminal risks.

The TF group head is Attorney Park Dong-il, who holds ship officer qualifications (navigation officer, engineer, operating officer, etc.) and a Singapore Foreign Legal Consultant (FLC) qualification. Also joining the TF are Attorney Kim Nak-hyung, a former Busan High Court judge who serves as an arbitrator at the Korean Commercial Arbitration Board; Attorney Park Sung-joon, who exclusively handles international tax and customs issues; and Won Jung-yeon, a foreign attorney (New York State, U.S.) with experience in international arbitration, investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS), and U.S. litigation.

In addition, Attorney Kim Min-soo and foreign attorney Jang Jin-eol, who hold Russian and Chinese attorney qualifications respectively, and Attorney Choi Kwang-hyun, a specialist attorney in criminal, civil, and administrative fields, also join.

Daeryun believes that with the opening of the maritime court, domestic shipping, shipbuilding, and logistics companies will be able to resolve disputes more quickly and efficiently at home, breaking away from the structure of relying on overseas courts or arbitration institutions in the UK and Singapore. The law firm industry also forecast that it will be reorganized from a simple litigation-centered structure into a dedicated TF-centered system equipped with multilingual dispute-handling capabilities and international jurisdiction litigation capabilities.

Attorney Park Dong-il said, "The Maritime and International Commercial Court will reduce domestic companies' legal cost burden and provide opportunities for the relief of rights," adding, "Based on the infrastructure and global personnel we have proactively built, we will fully play the role of a one-stop maritime legal partner so that corporate clients can focus on management with peace of mind."
